Central Division Vice Director: Kermit Carlson, W9XA
I was first licensed in 1969 as WB9FBX, a call I traded for W9XA in 1978. Since Junior High a life-long passion for the hobby of amateur radio has inspired my education and vocation. An interest in radio and RF has led from broadcast engineering at WEFM and WGN-TV in Chicago to a twenty-two year career at Fermilab National Laboratory where I am employed as an Sr. Engineering Physicist in the Accelerator Division’s SCRF (Super-Conducting RF) Department. My wife Caron, W9QLT and I live on the Kane County farm that has been in my family for the last century, with one Sheltie and two cats.My activities in ham radio are as varied as this avocation. I pursue DXing, VHF/UHF weak signal and EME, 30 and 40 meter CW, digital modes, and as many of the hobbies within this hobby that time will allow. I am an active homebrewer who enjoys building projects ranging from large antenna arrays to surface mount designs. I have built and presently maintain FM, APCO-25 and D-Star repeater systems for local groups, and I operate repeaters under the W9XA call on 50, 220, 440 and 1296 Mhz. The latest homebrew project has been to learn the art of chip bonding with gold wire and and a surplus ultrasonic K&S wirebonder. I hold a Second-Class Commercial RadioTelegraph license, the General Class Radiotelephone license with Ship Radar Endorsement. I hold active memberships in the FRRL (Fox River Radio League – Aurora,IL) TAPR, AMSAT, ARES, and MARS. I am also a past officer of the NIDXA – Northern Illinois DX Association where I sort and deliver the 9th call area inbound QSL bureau cards “X-cards” . I have supported many amateur organizations by serving in various positions. In my local club - the Fox River Radio League Aurora, Illinois - I have served as Hamfest Chair, Treasurer, and President; I served as the Technical Committee chair of the Illinois Repeater Association 1987 - 1991; Vice President and President of the Central States VHF Society; recent past Secretary and current Vice-president of the Northern Illinois DX Association . In 2005 I was appointed to the ARRL VHF/UHF Advisory Committee where I served as Chairman until my election to the position of Vice-Director for the Central Division of the ARRL. As a member of the ARRL Board I serve as the Chair of the EMC (ElectroMagnetic Compatability) Committee. My other interests include aviation. I am a life member of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) and an FAA CFI ( Certified Flight Instructor ) for instrument instruction in both single and multiengine aircraft. I am also qualified as a pilot in helicopters, and I hold an FAA A&P (Airframe and Powerplant) mechanics rating. I believe that Local Club meetings, Hamfests and Conventions are important activities that promote the growth and health of our service. I have worked on the Hosting committees for the 1989 and 2009 Central States VHF Conferences , TAPR-ARRL Digital Communications Conferences; and the W9DXCC Conventions. I try to attend as many meetings and hamfests as my schedule will allow and I am available to speak at gatherings about the ARRL . Please contact me at W9XA@arrl.org with any questions. 73, Blue Skies and Favoring Winds ! – Kermit W9XA
